After Dubrovnik, we flew into Athens after dark. We took a cab from the airport to our Airbnb in the Plaka neighborhood, the perfect place to experience both the ancient and modern city. As we drove downtown everyone was walking in the streets, while the cab drive honked and waved out the window. It was moderately terrifying, but within a couple of days we were totally acclimated, walking in the streets like locals. We had dinner that first night at a little cafe right next door to our apartment.
The traffic and pedestrian interface was crazy! Everyone walks in the street and the cars just drive around them. Most of the streets are much busier than this one, but the parking is typical.
Wherever this guy goes, he makes friends.
At the Acropolis Museum, a glass floor allowed us to look into excavated Roman baths, from when the Romans occupied the city.
Ancient Greek theatre in which the first tragedies were acted and accompanied by a Greek chorus. Today you can also see rock concerts. The acoustics are so good no sound system is needed.
And on any street, you’ll see remnants of 2nd century BCE next to modern buildings.
Around any corner you’ll come across a preserved excavation site.
Visible from below, the Acropolis and Parthenon.
This is Wikipedia’s photo of the Acropolis complex, seen from the Hill of the Muses.
We took a tour and met an English couple. We had a meal after, and I think we’ll see each other again. Here we are standing in the hill where murderers were tried in ancient times. Behind us in the far hill is the Temple of Artemis.
